So youtube, continuing their history of soliciting feedback from their users about new layouts and then ignoring it when it isn't to their liking, unveiled their new video page.
Holy fuck what is this mess.
Whatever happened to sorting comments by timestamp? Instead they have to try and get all smart, grouping them by "highest rated" and whatnot. Not only that, where the shit is the timestamp? Where are the comment rating controls? Oh wait, you have to mouse over the specific comment first.
Navigation around the site and your account is even less obvious now. They hide everything you'd ever want to click in a menu, so that you have to click something else first.
The kicker: I was viewing a random video to see this shit, when I noticed it was playing back in their low quality format. For whatever reason, that setting never permanently sticks, so I found my account preferences and went to playback options to set it back to high quality.
Except the "prefer high quality" option is no longer there.
I only get a choice between "prefer ass quality" and "choose based on my connection" which is exactly the same as "prefer ass quality". I have a 7mbps cable connection, it can handle downloading their higher quality formats just fine when the server isn't loaded or acting up.
What the shit is this mess of fuck?
Seriously, go back to web design school and learn how to design an intuitive layout. Here's a hint: Often-used options such as the subscriptions panel, account settings, comment rating controls, etc. and useful information such as how long ago a comment or video was posted should be easily visible. Why hide everything until we mouse over or click on something?
I'm betting even fewer people will read video descriptions now, because it takes up so little room on the page by default and when expanded doesn't limit its vertical height and have a scroll bar. Giving any block-level element a scroll bar is an elementary task in CSS. In fact, I had a Stylish style that would do that for the older, better video pages. I've modified it to work with the new one, but I shouldn't have to fix your fucking site for you.
What the fuck, youtube. Why don't you fix your site's bugs instead of making new layouts that everyone hates. Fix the "video's loaded to 75% but stuck buffering at 25%" bug. Fix the bug where it suddenly just says "no, you aren't getting any more of this video". Fix annotations so that they consistently show up at the proper timing. Bring back the ability to add videos to the quicklist off of a user's channel. Give us a report comment link so reporting abusive commenters goes from having to navigate a neverending maze of help pages that don't go anywhere useful to "click and report".
Finally, grow a backbone and defend Fair Use. You've let WMG walk all over fair use. Make an effort to verify copyright claims before disabling or removing a video. Don't take action immediately upon accusation. This is America, not Nazi Germany. You're a video streaming site, not Big Brother.
